Archives Strategy and Policies

The Library has published an Archives Strategy to 2020.  The Archives Service strives to acquire, preserve and make accessible the archival collections held by the Library, and to provide services in support of the research and information needs of the University community and other appropriate users.

We acquire archival collections which support the teaching and research needs of National University of Ireland, Galway, as well as strenghtening links between the University and its community. The Archives Service acquires material by donation, loan and purchase. The Archives Service is particularly interested in acquiring collections relating to the West of Ireland generally, and collects in a number of subject areas where it has existing strengths:

  • collections relating to  Irish language and literature
  • academic papers relating to the University
  • landed estate collections
  • political collections
  • business collections
  • theatre and literature collections.

In order to meet these aims, an Archives Acquisition and Evaluation Policy has been defined to govern the running of the archives service.

This policy have been put in place by the Archives Working Group.
